About Stephen Sadley
Stephen Sadley is the Chief Executive of the Asbestos Removal Contractors Association (ARCA). Steve joined ARCA 2000
as the Association’s Business Development Manager becoming the General Manager and then CEO in 2008.
Steve has spent all his career in the asbestos management industry, which has included roles as an asbestos analyst
/surveyor in the UK, asbestos project manager for the Mass Transit Railway Corporation (MTRC) in Hong Kong and asbestos
manager for a UK demolition company.
Steve has a BA in Business Management and a BSc in Environmental Science and is a Fellow of both the Institute of
Leadership and Management (ILM) and the Chartered Management Institute (CMI).
Steve has built strong relationships across the industry, and as CEO of ARCA is a member of The Asbestos Liaison Group
(ALG), which is a forum of key stakeholders, including the HSE, that work together to promote best practices in the control of
and work with asbestos. He played a significant part in setting up the Asbestos Removal Management Institute (ARMI).
Clients see Trade Association membership as a safeguard – is a contractor a member of “an established professional
institution or body” and “do these bodies have arrangements in place which provide some reassurance that health and safety
is part of the route to membership of their profession?” [Guidance on CDM 2015 HSE ref 153]
Clients have a legal responsibility to appoint a competent removal contractor, how can they achieve this?
