About Stephen Platkiw

As the Manager of the Asbestos Testing and Consultancy (ATaC) division of ARCA, Stephen Platkiw is a member of the Asbestos Liaison Group (ALG) and also sits on the Asbestos in Schools Group, Joint Union Asbestos Committee and the UKAS Technical and Advisory Committee.

Steve started his career as an analytical chemist and has since spent 30 years in the asbestos industry. As a certified competent person in asbestos Steve was a director of an asbestos analytical and surveying company, before joining the Asbestos Removal Contractors Association (ARCA) in 2007 and becoming ATaC Manager in 2012.

Legislation requires property owners and managers to assess premises for the presence of asbestos containing materials and manage the associated risks.

The use of asbestos in the UK ceased in 2000, however there is still a large percentage of properties, built prior to this date containing asbestos; schools, hospitals, housing, commercial buildings.

Duty holders need to understand the risks from asbestos and their legal responsibilities to manage those risks.
