About Dr Nick Paling
Nick is Head of Evidence & Engagement at the Westcountry Rivers Trust and specialises in the analysis, visualisation and communication of strategic information to engage stakeholders and ensure work to improve rivers and catchments is targeted in the most important areas. At the Trust, Nick manages a highly qualified team of environmental scientists and ecologists, who have broad expertise in environmental modelling and monitoring, data analysis and visualisation and stakeholder/community engagement. Nick is currently involved a number of projects including: our flagship project with South West Water – the Upstream Thinking Initiative; the Defra Urban Ecosystem Services (Local Action) Project; the EU WaterLIFE Project (in partnership with WWF and The Rivers Trust), and the new EU Interreg-funded SPONGE 2020 Project focusing on water sensitive urban design in Somerset.
Westcountry Rivers Trust led on Defra’s Local Action Project (formerly Ecosystem Services in Urban Water Environments), which focused on the collaborative targeting, design and delivery of innovative, nature-based solutions (ie SuDS) with stakeholders to address surface water flooding and related problems in urban landscapes. WRT are also now partners in the Interreg 2-Seas-funded SPONGE 2020 Project with Somerset County Council, attempting to embed this approach in Somerset towns.
